Nous avons tous ce membre de la famille ou ami qui découvre le monde merveilleux de l'informatique. Une des petites contrariétés (pour lui-même ou son destinataire) est d'envoyer (ou recevoir) des e-mails de 5 Mo, s'ils n'ont pas déjà eu de message d'erreur car les pièces jointes étaient trop importantes.

Pour éviter une certaine frustration, voici un rapide didacticiel pour mon père qui lui montre comment réduire et envoyer des images en une seule opération.

La solution la plus facile que j'ai trouvée pour Windows est la fonction "Envoyer vers" de l'Explorateur. Oui je sais, j'ai essayé de le pousser à l'utilisation de Linux, mais bon, n'étant pas sur place pour faire l'administrateur, le vendeur disposait pour le coup de plus d'arguments.

Il existe de meilleures solutions à mon avis, comme Dropbox qui fonctionne sur Windows, Mac OS X et Linux (et sur iPhone) ; c'est tout ce dont j'aurais besoin.

Vous pouvez cliquer sur n'importe quelle vignette pour visualiser l'image originale, puis jouer avec les flèches gauche et droite du clavier pour naviguer d'avant en arrière, ou Échap pour continuer la lecture de l'article.

Tout d'abord, dirigez-vous vers le dossier contenant vos images avec l'Explorateur. Vous devriez obtenir une liste d'images, affichées sous forme de liste, de vignettes ou tout autre forme, selon vos propres paramètres.

Une fois ce dossier ouvert, utilisez les touches Ctrl ou Maj pour vous aider à sélectionner les fichiers adéquats (avec votre clavier ou votre souris).

Vous pouvez constater en bas à droite, dans la barre d'état, que la somme des fichiers sélectionnés pèse environ 28 Mo. dans cet exemple. Cela ne passera jamais dans un e-mail !

Vous pouvez maintenant cliquer avec le bouton droit de votre souris sur n'importe laquelle des images sélectionnées. Cela ouvrira une boîte de dialogue contextuelle où vous choisirez le sous-menu « Envoyer vers », puis « Destinataire ».

Et une fenêtre surgit ! (pas plus loin que votre écran, n'ayez pas peur...) Vous vous verrez offrir deux options avant que les images ne soient envoyées vers votre client e-mail afin de rédiger votre message. La première réduira la taille des images alors que la seconde ne modifiera aucune d'entre elles.

Sélectionnez la première option (par défaut) et cliquez sur « Afficher plus d'options... ».

Vous serez alors invité à choisir parmi trois différentes dimensions courantes : « Petite », « Moyenne » et « Grande ». J'ai ici choisi « Moyenne » ; à vous de choisir celle qui vous semble la plus pertinente.

Avec « Moyenne » sélectionnée, toutes les images seront réduites pour tenir dans une boite virtuelle de 800 pixels par 600 pixels. Ne vous inquiétez pas, les images ne seront pas déformées mais garderons leurs proportions. Les images verticales dans mon exemple feront au final 450 par 600 pixels (largeur par hauteur).

Une fois vos choix effectués, vous pouvez presser OK et laisser faire le sale boulot à votre ordinateur.

Une fois fini, il devrait ouvrir une fenêtre de rédaction appartenant à votre client e-mail ; dans mon cas, Mozilla Thunderbird. Vous pouvez (devriez) changer le sujet pour quelque chose de lus humain qu'une bête série de noms de fichiers bizarres. Rédigez votre message, remplissez l'adresse du destinataire et vous avez fini ! Il ne vous reste plus qu'à appuyer sur « Envoyer » et...

Votre e-mail est bien plus léger (970 Ko.) et facile à lire sur n'importe quel client e-mail. Félicitations ! Moins de gaspillage de bande passante, et une famille heureuse et unie !

How I explained my father how to resize images before sending an e-mail

We all have this dad/mom/sister/brother or friend who discovers computers. And one annoying thing (for them and their recipient) is to send/receive mails that are 5Mb. big. Admitting they don't get an error message because the attachments are too big in the first place.

To avoid some frustration, here's a quick tutorial for my father to show him how to resize and send pictures all in a row.

The easiest solution I found on Windows is the "Send to" function in the Explorer. Yeah, I tried to push him to use Linux, but well, I wasn't there to play the IT guy, so the reseller had a better argumentation on this.

There are better solutions now in my opinion, such as Dropbox which runs on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux (and iPhone), and that's all I need.

The screen-shots are all in French and I translated it without checking every single little detail, but I'm pretty sure the context will help you to find your way out. So, here we go:

You can click any thumbnail to open an enlarged picture, then press the left and right arrow keys to go back and forth, or escape to continue reading the article.

First, open the folder where your photos are with the Explorer. You should end up with the list of pictures, displayed as a detailed list, thumbnails, or other ways, depending on your own settings.

Once this folder opened, use the Ctrl and Shift keys to help you select the right files (with your keyboard or your mouse).

You can see at the bottom right, in the status bar, that the sum of the files selected weights around 28Mb. That certainly wouldn't fit in any e-mail.

You can then right click on any of the selected files to open up a context dialog where you'll select the "Send to" sub-menu, then "Mail Recipient".

An then POP! A popup... pops up. You'll have two options to choose from, before the images are sent to your e-mail client for further writing. The first will resize the pictures while the second doesn't change anything on the images.

Select the first option (the default) and click on "Display More Options".

You'll then be prompted to choose between three different common sizes: "Small", "Medium" and "Large". Well... I selected "Medium" here; up to you to choose the one you prefer.

With "Medium" selected, all the images will be resized so that they fit into a box of 800 pixels by 600 pixels. Don't worry, they won't stretch but keep the aspect ratio. Vertical pictures in my example will be 450 by 600 pixels big (width by height).

Once all your choices done, you can press OK and let the computer do the dirty work.

It will open up a redaction window from your default e-mail client. In my case: Mozilla Thunderbird. You can (should) change the subject to something more human than a series of weird files' names. Write your message, fill in the recipient's address and you're done! Just click "Send" and...

Your e-mail is a lot more lightweight (970Kb.) and easy to read in any e-mail client. Congratulations! No more bandwidth wasting and happy family all together!

How to refill your credit by SMS with China Mobile

This is just a quick tip that might be of interest. If you want to refill your mobile phone credit with a simple SMS, just follow those steps:

Buy a China Mobile card (this kind of paper) in any convenience store (50 or 100 RMB);
Find the number starting with "09" at the bottom;
Send a SMS to China Mobile with Cz followed by the former number (in this case Cz091487305783274341).

Please note that you have to do this before your credit expires, or you're not going to be able to send the SMS at all.

Balise #VALID_ID pour SPIP

Cette balise permet de générer un attribut de type ID ou NAME valide.

Pour utiliser la balise #VALID_ID, il vous suffit de copier le code suivant dans le fichier « mes_fonctions.php » (ou créer ce fichier) dans le dossier « squelettes » de SPIP.

La syntaxe complète est [(#VALID_ID{label_perso})] ;
{label_perso} permet de fixer l'intitulé si le titre ne comporte aucun caractère latin ;
Cette balise est a priori utilisable dans n'importe quelle boucle renvoyant un #TITRE.

It's getting usual that I'm confronted to a visual void when looking for the application I want to use, the feed I want to read, or any other thing ordered in list by its default name.

This feed hosted by David Larlet which is called “Flux RSS des billets et des pensées du site biologeek.com” was the last straw today (just the expression, I'm just one of his fan so far :) ). In our case, every non–French speaking person is going to wonder what this title means, and the answer could be “RSS feed of posts and thoughts from biologeek.com website”.

Now. In English, this feed would then be listed with the “r” items (“RSS”) while it would be listed with “f”s in French (“Flux”). And the same thing happens in my Ubuntu applications menu (though I use GNOME DO a lot): The same software will appear at different positions in the menu depending on the language of the OS.

I don't know for others, but as far as I'm concerned, I'm looking for the name of the application I want to use first (or website if we refer to a list of feeds), not its purpose (since there's already categories for this). I'm using English and French OS at the same time on different computers, and I can tell how annoying it is to look for “Navigateur Web Firefox” on one computer in French, then “Firefox Web Browser” on another. Using the name of the application or website, or the domain name as the first words in the item's name would allow some consistency throughout internationalized navigations! It's that simple.

And if I'm taking David's feed as an example again, I'd be waiting for “biologeek.com : billets et pensées” in my list of feeds, but the first thing that appears is “Flux”, which is somehow like a pleonasm in a feed reader's context. We can make art and draw a pipe while writing that it's not (ou pas), but well... You know...

You can comment if you think my remark is not appropriate. I'm willing to understand if I'm wrong, but as far as I can see, this is a cognitive accessibility problem for me.

Searching for items in a menu is not right.
