The right tool for the right job

I recently traveled to Africa, with a new camera.

I didn’t set the date properly, resulting in a series of photos with wrong date and times.

Willing to fix that, I searched for softwares to change the EXIF data in the photos. People were mentioning jhead and exiftools as really powerful tools, but I was feeling more confident with softwares providing a GUI.

What happened then is I searched for tools, tried to install some, tried to make some work through WINE, etc. This took me hours and the softwares usually crashed miserably.

In the end, I used jhead: After spending 5 minutes reading the manual, I was able to shift the date properly with the shell, then renamed the photos using the UNIX command rename (using the -n option first). Then batch importing again all my photos through Rapid Downloader got all my files tidy.

Done.

Since I’ve been looking for this and most of the results I had were actual screenshots, more than a way to take them, here is a how to do so:

  1. Press the "windows list" button for 5 seconds;
  2. You should hear the sound the camera makes when taking a photo, along with a notification telling you the screenshot was done successfully;
  3. Browse your gallery, I found it in the "capture" folder.
