Close Encounter

(fr)

Small encounter with a car and some scooters this morning with the skateboard, on my way to work (hit the car’s door which opened on my left, fell on the scooters parked on my right). Considering I’m regular, I must have done some nice acrobatic before I landed. Right flank hurts, left thumb and wrist are not great, but overall OK.

I bless the fact I saw that coming and anticipated, even not enough.

Seven things a week — week 12

Bunch of battery chargers

Seriously, I don’t see the point of collecting these!

Wacom graphic tablet

I bought this one several years ago when I happened to have RSI. A better keyboard and a better chair came with it, as I needed to work on my posture and habits. It was fun, but I never used it for a long long time, and nobody around me seemed to be interested.

Cat winter jacket

No… Seriously. This thing will never be on my cat. I think A friend gave it to me, but I really don’t see the use of it. I prefer to keep my apartment warm enough.

IKEA shelf

I just bought too many of them. Don’t ask.

Restaurant menu

Well… This menu was stolen for me by my ex‑girlfriend. I know… I needed to practice my Chinese and she’s that awesome. My Chinese still sucks, by the way.

Linksys router

This little blue box served me for a while, until I got tired of having to reboot it everyday to get some network.

Macbook Pro (not in the picture)

Frédéric gave it to me when I was in dire straits. I guess it’s fair enough I do the same for the same reason. This will go to friends who will have a better use of it than I do at the moment.

This time, a scavenger was waiting to take the things away. It was nice to explain him how to use a graphic tablet in Chinese, even though he probably had no clue what it was.

Seven things a week — week 11

Sleeping bag

This sleeping bag has seen a lot of adventures. As a consequence, it also has quite a few burns due to its proximity with the fire that was keeping us warm at night. I still really like it, but we bought better and lighter ones for our trip in Inner Mongolia last July, so no need to keep it for the dust and the rats.

Delsey trolley case

This luggage was given to me by friends a few years ago, and mostly only served once. It got damaged by the budget airlines we took from Amsterdam to Geneva with Jan, a few days after her bigger sister got damaged by Air France when we arrived from Shanghai (but Air France replaced it without blinking). I don’t remember ever using it since.

Clipper

Grace helped Tom and I to buy one clipper each when we were at TNC, I think the battery finally died. After so many years of services, I can’t blame it.

Guide Books

These are a Lonely planet and a Guide du Routard I never really used. I think the Guide du Routard was given to me by my sister after she visited me.

Small massage tool

It was fun to buy, it was fun to use a few times, then it just stayed on a shelf. Poor thing might find a better owner now.

Camera bag

I bought this bag when I was carrying too many lenses with my reflex. I used to carry them all the time, because… “You never know”. I gave up on carrying so many things a long time ago, and rats in the attic started to find this bag comfortable, apparently. :)

Cat carrier

Kali and Silvia left me this when they left China and I completely forgot about it. I happen to have bought another bigger one in the meantime. Having only one cat, I don’t see the point of keeping this one.

Seven things a week — week 10

Cheap rain poncho

I bought this one, or it was given to me, for whatever reason. I probably will never use it as I have a better one.

Fabric transfer of Paris metro map

I bought this map with the intent of crafting a custom made wallet for my then girlfriend. It obviously never seen the light. Me and my love of ironning. :p

Egg cooker

Looks like it’s the ex‑girlfriend’s related stuff batch…

My ex‑parents in law gave me this back then. We probably didn’t use it more than four times overall. I’m sure some like boiled eggs more than I do. :)

A lego plane

Another project I never took the time to do. I give away the material, but I’ll keep the idea in mind. :)

Earplugs

I’m frankly annoyed with how much money I spent on these super fancy earplugs. They’re probably “OK” if you don’t try to sleep with them, but the fact they have hard parts is making the whole sleep experience quite uncomfortable. I’ll stick to the foam ones from now on.

Round pink hanging cloth hanger

It’s pink. That’s a good enough reason, no?

A cloth hanger on wheels

Another thing I bought for my ex‑girlfriend and that I never really used.

Seven things a week — week 9

After nearly eight years living in the same place, I tend to accumulate things.

Each one of these things are often related to memories more than really useful, or maybe they become obsolete and it’s hard to get rid of them, just because I tend to have this attachment to things. They pile up, take dust, and although it’s nice to gaze at them from time to time, they’re useless. I decided I would get rid of seven things every weekend this year and, maybe, provide another more meaningful use to these objects.

Because I believe in the power of objects as traces of past events, I will take a photo to save the memory attached to them, I will then leave them down my apartment for anybody to take.

Considering we’re in China, I’m sure somebody will find a better use to them than myself rather earlier than later.

Jars

I kept all the jars from jam or other Nutella pots, sauces, tomato, etc. thinking I could use them to make jam or other delicious things. I have way too much. I kept around ten in case I would make more jam some day.

Tap

I had to change the tap in my bathroom for some reason and kept the old one. Useless to me. Gone.

Tea pot

This one was given to me by a tea shop, which wanted to create a website but forgot to contact me back. I’m not too inclined of doing tea ceremony, and considering the capacity of the pot, I mostly don’t use it. I’m sure somebody here will.

Magnetic wonder

Yes: Wonderful object which consists of a big magnet and a small top in suspended rotation (when things are well setup). Past the first amazement, the whole thing got completely useless as setting things up is quite time consuming and the rubber parts rot a little. Maybe the magnet will find some use.

Spoon

This spoon was the one we used when doing the Zotter Chocolate Indulgence Tour. It was deliciously delicious. Really… If you can go check it and love chocolate, indulge yourself right away. I never really used it later though.

Asus A6-JC Laptop

This computer has been serving me for ten years (almost day per day, I think), first to write the different editions of “CSS, the total guide”, but also during my official transition from architect to frontend developer. It then got recycled as a media center with XMBC, then Kodi, and recently got replaced by a Rasperry Pi, which does the same job while consuming less energy.

Bag

Tom gave me this bag before they left China the first time. I tried it once and understood it wouldn’t fit my needs. I’m sure somebody else will find it really useful.

Have fun, little things!

Edit: Everything but the jars were gone an hour and a half later. Everything was gone five hours later
